Developing communities through access to credit.

Since we were founded in the 1950’s, we’ve been dedicated to creating access to credit for everyone in the community as a tool for economic development. We are proud to be a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) by bringing affordable and safe banking to those who need it the most, and work with our members to bring about financial transformation in their lives.

Serving District Government employees

Originally an employer-based credit union, we still provide thousands of District employees with access to affordable and safe banking services.

Bringing banking to underserved communities

DC Credit Union is committed to also serving the underbanked and unbanked—those with little or no access to mainstream financial institutions, who often rely on expensive check-cashing services and predatory lenders.

Meet Edward

“Being a part of DC Credit Union has allowed me to have a savings account. You have to remember that banks are out here trying to make money and the credit unions are not. They’re trying to help you save money.”

A long history of caring about our community

District Government Employees Federal Credit Union (DGEFCU) was founded in 1954 to serve the financial needs of District Government employees. Because many were struggling to make ends meet and had few banking options, District employees were especially vulnerable to the dangerous cycle of borrowing from loan sharks. The credit union stepped in to offer much-needed banking services and loans at reasonable rates and with low fees.

Now more than 60 years later, we are DC Credit Union. We continue to serve District Government employees, as well as the communities of Adams Morgan, Mount Pleasant and Columbia Heights, the employees of several large companies and members of various membership organizations. In addition, DC Credit Union embraces and celebrates the diversity of Washington, D.C. We strive to be more inclusive through ACCESO, an innovative bilingual community branch that empowers the local immigrant population and an under-served community.

We are proud of our community and all of our members, each of whom has a story. Our credit union is built on those stories of strength and transformation.
